Our journey so far

The 23,000 people we employ in the UK and the US are the lifeblood of our company. Their safety and wellbeing is a top priority for every one of us at National Grid – it underpins everything we do.

Our vision is to build and develop an inclusive culture and a diverse workforce that is fully representative of the communities we serve. We treat everyone fairly and equally, without discrimination on the grounds of race, age, role, gender, gender identity, colour, religion, country of origin, sexual orientation, marital status, dependents, disability, social class or political views.

Making sure our workforce reflects the diversity of the communities we serve is also important to us. That’s why we report annually on our progress on ethnic minority and female representation on our Board, at manager level, among new joiners, and our workforce as a whole.

Fair pay

Fairness in pay also reflects our approach to responsibility. We’re a living wage employer in the UK and undertake a Living Wage review each year to ensure continued alignment. We also review our Gender Pay reporting annually. We have closed this gap over time and now rank in the top quartile.

Looking after our people in a crisis 

Looking after our people has been our number one priority during the COVID-19 crisis – supporting them as they move to a home-working environment, or making sure critical staff can safely do essential work to keep the lights on and the gas flowing.
